Packaging Test Methods

Packaging test methods at the Advance Packaging Test Laboratory follow test sequence protocols established by ISTA, the International Safe Transit Association.

Based on the packaging test methods recommended for a packaged product or unitized load, Advance Packaging administers ISTA Series 1 performance tests comprised of vibration, shock, and/or compression testing. Packaging test methods for ISTA Series 1 tests evaluate product and packaging integrity and strength.

For advanced ISTA Series 3 testing, Advance Packaging follows packaging test methods designed to provide laboratory simulation of the damage-producing motions, forces, conditions, and sequences of packaged product handling and transport environments. Packaging tests in this series are applied across broad sets of circumstances, such as a variety of vehicle types and routes, or a varying number of handling exposures. Depending on the package product being tested, packaging test methods in ISTA Series 3 evaluate performance using various vibration, shock, compression, and atmospheric preconditioning (temperature and humidity) tests.

For descriptions of individual packaging tests, go to the ISTA Packaging Tests page of the Advance Packaging website.
