Packaging Corporation Brings $13 Million in Machinery to West Michigan

July 9, 2018 in Press Release

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. July 9, 2018 -- Advance Packaging Corporation, an independent corrugated board manufacturer today announced they have made a $13,000,000 investment in a new state-of-the-art printing processing machine. The new technology, trademarked by Advance as BentLine Technology joins the company’s existing 20 plus machines.

The sophistication of this new process, comprised of a Göpfert Ovation 8-Color Flexo Press and Bobst Mastercut 2.1 Platen Die Cutter will allow Advance to hire up to six new, full time employees. Employees of this new crew will undergo 30 days of paid training to develop highly specialized trade skills in the process.

The BentLine technology separates Advance from other providers of corrugated printing products because of its ability to produce full eight color prints and up to 10,000 sheets per hour. Unlike other machines that randomly spot check production pieces, the BentLine system individually inspects 100% of the output ensuring each piece is free of flaws. Advance will begin producing product from the new machine the second week of July.

“Our decision to grow our product line with the addition of the new BentLine technology will further distinguish us from our competition and allow us to remain the premier corrugated packaging flexo printer in United States”, says Scott Wilcox, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Advance Packaging. “As the only company in the North America with this type of technology, we can serve clients on a national level while keeping manufacturing jobs here in Michigan.”

Advance Packaging Raises the Bar in Flexo Print Quality

July 9, 2018 in Press Release

July 9, 2018, GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Advance Packaging Corp. announces it has taken an audacious step in its printing and die cutting process that will raise the print quality for its customers to near lithographic caliber.

The Grand Rapids-based company has re-engineered the traditional method of inline direct printing and die cutting of corrugated board to create the ultimate solution, says Scott Wilcox, Advance’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

Traditional North American high-end flexographic converters typically utilize one machine to both print, and then rotary die cut the parts inline. Advance is the first North American company to combine the approach by taking two devices — a standalone flexo printer connected to a high-speed platen die cutter — and operating them as if the two units were an inline machine. This process is going to allow Advance to achieve near litho print quality — printing anywhere from 136 to 151 lines per inch.

For Advance’s current and potential customers, this new process opens up creative opportunities and benefits that direct print flexo has to offer.

"This will allow us to expand our ability to match customer's art requirements utilizing flexo technology rather that traditionally requiring a litho graphic,” says Wilcox. “With the technology we have added, we are sitting in a great position to be able to match or provide comparable graphics utilizing direct print in comparison to litho and allow our customers to realize all the benefits of direct print.”

Majority of retail consumers cannot tell the difference between direct print and litho at such a high line screen, which puts Advance in a great place within the marketing for high-end graphics, Wilcox added.

Advance’s non-graphics customers will also benefit from the new technology through additional capacity.

“Some of the current work that runs on our other machines will shift to this new line, and this should help us reduce our overall lead times on all of our die cutters,” Wilcox says.

Grand Rapids Manufacturer Adjusts to Labor Shortage with New Machinery

October 19, 2016 in Press Release

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. October 19, 2016 -- Advance Packaging Corporation, an independent corrugated board manufacturer, announced that it has added an additional top of the line partition assembler to its Grand Rapids facility. Partition assemblers make dividers for packaging and shipping products to protect items from damage. With the addition of the new Solema Partition Assembler, Advance now has 19 pivotal machines for production use in the automotive, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, consumer goods, furniture, and toy industries.

The Solema Partition Assembler joins Advance’s existing assembly equipment and is fully automated, requiring less initial training for operators. Advance chose this assembler because of its efficient and reliable technologies and Advance strives to keep its machinery inventory among the best. The company plans to run the new assembler alongside existing partition equipment, operated by experienced employees. The Solema assembler is part of Advance’s continuing 8-million-dollar expenditure plan for 2016.

“The new automated partition assembler was purchased to help us cope with the current labor shortage here in West Michigan,” said Scott Wilcox, Vice President of Marketing at Advance Packaging. “It will allow us to exceed our current output with less man hours and decrease our lead times for new orders. Our long term goal is to utilize this machine on a 24-hour production cycle which would require us to hire at least five new employees.”

Advance Packaging Corp. Adds Childcare Reimbursement Program

September 8, 2016 in Press Release

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. September 8, 2016 -- Advance Packaging Corporation, an independent corrugated board manufacturer and converter, announced that they will be offering childcare reimbursements to their employees. The new reimbursement program will take effect January 1, 2017, and is available to full time employees with dependents under the age of 13 that have been with Advance for at least 90 days.

Employees can receive up to $500.00 per calendar quarter for their licensed day care costs. This new childcare reimbursement program comes in addition to benefits already available at Advance including paid holidays and vacation, 401K, dental insurance, health insurance, disability pay and tuition reimbursement to name a few.

“Advance chose to implement this childcare reimbursement program because we care about our employees and their families and want to help alleviate the stresses childcare costs can create,” Says Sue Albrecht, Vice President of Administration at Advance Packaging. “As we expanded our 24-hour production cycle to 7 days a week it is our hope that this additional assistance to employees with children will provide the flexibility to work other shifts. Additionally, with this program, we’re hoping to attract qualified candidates who otherwise may have to decline a job on a shift due to child care. Additionally, by reducing the instances in which employees must take unplanned vacation time off due to an intermittent loss of a family member providing child care, they can continue to work those days and save their vacation pay and time for planned days of rest and relaxation.

Advance Packaging’s Green Focused Facility Earns FTA Sustainability Excellence Award

facilityNASHVILLE, TN – May 3, 2015 – Advance Packaging Corp. understands that clean manufacturing, the development of people and economic stability are keys to long-term viability. In 2005, the FTA member broke ground on a massive 425,000 sq. ft. manufacturing space in Grand Rapids, MI. In the planning stages of the new build, Advance Packaging took the opportunity to create a facility that would shrink its environmental footprint even as it allowed its physical, production and geographic footprints to grow. For choosing to go above and beyond in its consideration of the environment and its dedication to sustainably focused business operations, Advance Packaging Corp. was presented with Flexographic Technical Association’s (FTA) 2015 Sustainability Excellence Award at tonight’s Annual Awards Banquet, staged in conjunction with the Association’s Annual Forum in Nashville, TN.Advance Packaging’s new building works in harmony with its environment, which happened to be covered in nearly 1.5 acres of wetlands. After relocating the wetlands and adding another half acre to it, the environment is thriving better than it did before. When it was time to break ground on the new building, the company took great care to ensure the structure was sustainable in a variety of ways, First, the floorplan was designed to minimize human contact with sheets by placing corrugator machines, converting machines and shipping docks in optimal spots. Conveyor lines were implemented to reduce energy consumption. Additionally, the company purchased a 110-in. BHS corrugator which enables Advance Packaging to now produce more and use less natural gas while doing it. Above the new corrugator, Advance Packaging installed barriers and tubes to capture, then distribute the heat generated during production, further reducing energy costs by heating the building in the winter and keeping it cooler in the summer.Beyond its eco friendly new facility, Advance Packaging is also certified with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and only purchases from paper suppliers who comply with SFI standards. The company also instituted what it calls a “cooler corrugating philosophy” in 2010. By keeping paper temperatures below 212 degrees Fahrenheit, there is less waste due to over drying. And this year it will introduce a sustainability committee made up of employees from different departments, tasked with identifying areas of continuous improvement in its environmental footprint, social responsibilities and economic opportunities.“As a corrugated manufacturer, we rely heavily on Earth’s natural resources—namely trees,” said Sales & Marketing Analyst Catherine Cole. “We want to be around to provide packaging long into the future. That means taking care of our community so we have employees, our economic viability and the resources we need to produce our product.”# # #About FTA: Flexographic Technical Association (FTA), chartered in 1958, is a professional society dedicated to bringing all members of the flexographic printing community—printers, suppliers, consumer product companies, institutions, prepress houses and others–together by providing opportunities for the free exchange of technical ideas and discussion of mutual concerns. It is a proponent of maintaining and advancing quality standards and includes 1,650 member sites that represent more than 1,400 companies and 60,000 individuals. Foundation of FTA, founded in 1974, is the educational arm of FTA and is dedicated to supporting and advancing the flexographic printing industry.
